New 3M Software Enables Fast and Accurate Translation of ICD-9 Codes to ICD-10

Salt Lake City, Utah (June 14, 2011)—3M has released the 3M ICD-10 Translation Management Tool (TMT), a new software application that simplifies the translation of ICD-9 codes to ICD-10, helping hospitals, providers and vendors convert documents and systems in preparation for the new ICD-10 coding standard scheduled to be implemented nationwide in October 2013. Healthcare organizations can use 3M TMT to quickly translate ICD-9 codes found in clinical documentation, quality guidelines and utilization management programs, payer contracts, provider contracts, superbills, financial and quality reports, and many other sources.

Using 3M advanced clinical analytics, 3M TMT accurately translates basic codes and identifies complex codes where a one-to-one translation isn’t possible. Clinical references are provided so that all possible ICD-10 code translations can be reviewed. 3M TMT uses the power of the General Equivalence Mappings (GEMs) from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), but then enhances the GEMs with advanced features, including clinical descriptions, quick displays of code relationships, and built-in clinical indexes. The software is available as a hosted solution, making it easy to access from anywhere.

“ICD-9 and ICD-10 are two completely different coding languages. This means some codes will require evaluation during the translation process to avoid inaccurate or incomplete information,” said Sandeep Wadhwa, MD, Chief Medical Officer for 3M Health Information Systems. “With 3M TMT, we’re providing our clients with an affordable and easy to use tool that promotes accurate and complete translation of code lists from applications where ICD-9 codes are used.”

3M TMT is the latest addition to 3M’s comprehensive solutions for ICD-10 transition planning. 3M Health Information Systems is an international leader in ICD-10 classification with more than 15 years experience in developing and maintaining ICD-10 products and services around the world.  In the United States, under contract with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), 3M developed the ICD-10 Procedure Coding System (PCS) and the General Equivalence Mappings (GEMs), and produced the initial conversion of MS-DRGs to ICD-10.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has set October 1, 2013 as the implementation date for ICD-10, the new national coding standard that will replace ICD-9-CM. Codes based on the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), are used throughout health care to record, store, and retrieve diagnosis and procedure information for clinical, epidemiological and quality purposes, and for reimbursement.
