Mitochon Offers Regional Health Information Exchanges Free, Fully Certified EHRs for Member Physicians

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Aug. 1, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Public, regional health information exchanges (HIEs) can provide their member physicians with a fully certified (ONC-ATCB) EHR free-of-charge, according to an offer by Mitochon Systems.

"Our company is committed to making EHRs available to solo practitioners and small medical groups around the country. Encouraging the growth of HIEs is a part of that commitment. It's become clear that many physicians are balking at paying for the large monthly subscription fees demanded by some EHR vendors offered by certain HIEs.

We will work with any regional, public HIE to make our fully certified EHR available free to any physician who joins that exchange," said Chris Riley, chief executive officer of Mitochon Systems.

In its annual survey of HIEs, the eHealthInitiative reported recently that the total number of HIEs nationwide has grown to 255, however, only 24 (9.6%) have a sustainable business model. A survey of 1,200 physicians, published in 2010 in the Journal of American Medical Informatics Association found that 47% of physicians were unwilling to pay any monthly subscription to participate in an HIE.

Mitochon's mEMR system is the first, free, fully certified EHR system.
Physicians use the system free of charge; they view ads for medical products within the application. The Mitochon EHR includes advanced connectivity software enabling physicians to share information instantly with other physicians in their referral network, including those accessing patient data through an HIE.

"Providing a free EHR is a great way for HIEs to increase their physician membership. Expanding reach and communication capabilities is central to the mission of regional HIEs. Unfortunately, some HIEs have a list of approved EHRs that only include costly, legacy vendors who charge $15,000 or more in annual subscription fees. That is prohibitively expensive for many physicians," said Riley.

In addition to the free EHR, Mitochon offers CollaborateMD's practice management and billing system with unlimited claims processing for $7 per day per physician.

Mitochon's EHR is web-based; physicians can register and begin using it within 10 minutes. The company offers a series of self-paced, one-hour training modules at no charge.

Mitochon Systems was founded in 2006 by Andre Vovan, MD, MBA, FCCM, the director of a critical care department at a large California hospital.
