Editor's E-Note
Numbers may not lie, but they sure can be buried inside an organization to the point where they’re rendered useless. Extracting this information could prove invaluable to both provider and patient.

As you’ll read in this month’s E-News Exclusive, smart accountable care organizations aren’t allowing their data to sit by idly while clinical and financial goals go unmet. Instead, they’re performing analysis to uncover sharper business and care models.

ACOs Turn to Episodic Analysis
to Improve Clinical, Financial Performance

By Brett Furst

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and other insurers are moving from a fee-for-service to a fee-for-value approach incorporating shared risk arrangements under health care reform.

Instead of receiving payments separately, accountable care organizations (ACOs) will share in a bundled payment, a lump sum payment from payers to be split among all parties involved in a defined episode of care. Therefore, it’s critical that chief financial officers (CFOs) and physicians of these organizations gain insights into episodes of care to determine the best way to improve quality and cost-effectiveness.

What some ACOs may still be missing out on is the immediate opportunity to leverage data analytics around episodic analysis and cost profiling. For CFOs analyzing their return on investment, acute and specialty care is and will continue to be one of the largest cost drivers in health care. Those organizations that aren’t effectively using financial and performance tools such as episodic analysis run the risk of missing a major opportunity to benefit from their analytics.

Report: Patient Portal Market
Set to Boom

Approximately 50% of US hospitals and 40% of US physicians in ambulatory practices possess some type of patient portal technology, mostly acquired as a module of their practice management or EHR system. While the availability of patient portals doesn’t necessarily translate into active provider or patient use, the technology is emerging as the key platform for various efforts around patient engagement such as access to medical records, communication with providers, education, wellness tracking, and e-visits.

Analysis from Frost & Sullivan’s “US Patient Portal Market for Hospitals and Physicians: Overview and Outlook, 2012-2017” predicts that the market will grow significantly over the next five years. The total US patient portal market for hospitals and physicians earned revenue of $279.8 million in 2012. This is expected to increase steadily, reaching $898.4 million in 2017, representing a 221.1% increase. The majority of revenue primarily will result from increased demand driven by myriad forces, including the need to meet stage 2 meaningful use requirements, the growing move to clinical integration and accountable care, and increasing consumer demand for HIT.
