For many health care organizations, population health management promises to be a major focus in the upcoming years. Data analytics can help create long term care plans to boost wide swaths of patient groups.

There is a natural tension between managing the health of an individual patient and managing the health of a population of individuals. For years, the clarion call in health care and HIT has been to increase “patient centeredness,” resulting in broad industry concepts such as Blue Button and Patient-Centered Medical Homes (PCMH), among others. As the industry pendulum now swings back toward population health, there may be unintended consequences for the principle of patient-centered care.

Las Vegas will host the HIMSS Annual Conference & Exhibition February 29 to March 4. Shifting to a Monday through Friday schedule this year, the conference will open with keynote presentations from Sylvia Mathews Burwell, secretary of Health & Human Services, and Michael Dell, CEO of Dell Inc. The closing statement will be given by Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, who can share his experience with health care and technology in the National Football League.

AMA Launches Health2047

The American Medical Association (AMA) recently announced that it is investing $15 million to become founding partner of a health care innovation company, Health2047, Inc, which will conduct rapid exploration of innovative solutions to the biggest challenges facing the nation’s 1.1 million physicians and the patients they serve.

“Improving the health of the nation is at the core of the AMA's work and Health2047 will build partnerships to create new solutions for physicians and their patients that improve health care delivery and health outcomes,” says AMA CEO and Executive Vice President James L. Madara, MD, who serves as board chair of Health2047. “Health2047’s product orientation and entrepreneurial DNA will help forge new paths and bring commercial solutions to market faster.”
